Paul T. Maki, age 71 of Baraga passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at his home with his family at his side.

He was born November 9, 1932 in Keweenaw Bay, Michigan son of the late Victor and Katherine (Niemi) Maki. Paul was raised in L'Anse and graduated from L'Anse High School in 1951. During his high school years he excelled in sports, especially football. He was a Master Sgt. in the US Army National Guard and a member of the American Legion Post 444 in Baraga. Paul married the former Phyllis Ellenich on February 19, 1955 at St. Ann's Church in Baraga. He worked as an engineer for Pettibone for 35 years, retiring in 1985. Paul and his wife owned and operated the Side Track Bar in Baraga from 1984-1995. He worked for a few years with Bay Ambulance when it first got started. From 1967-84 he was with the Baraga Volunteer Fire Department. Paul enjoyed fishing hunting, football, hardball, softball, and was voted as the Baraga County All Time Softball Player. He was a member of St. Ann's Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife Phyllis of Baraga; sons Paul (Dawn) Maki, Jeffrey (Michelle) of Vero Beach, FL; daughters, Sandra (Lance) Forcia of L'Anse, Patti (Bill) Gauthier of Baraga, Vicki (Paul) Mayfield of Dallas, TX, Lori (Scott) Nicklas of Baraga; brother John (Sonja) Maki of L'Anse; 19 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death is an infant son David; brothers, Elmer and Jacob Maki; sisters, Esther Artibe, Ruth Kemppainen, and Lempi Maki.

Visitation will be on Wed. July 21, from 5-8 pm at Jacobson Funeral Home. The Knights of Columbus will say the Rosary at 7:30 pm followed by a presentation by the Baraga Volunteer Fire Dept. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at St. Ann's Church in Baraga, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Fr. Norm Clisch will officiate. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery. The Baraga Area Veterans under the direction of the American Legion Post 444 will conduct graveside military services. Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
