Paul M. Santti, 83, of Pelkie, died Tuesday evening, at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
Paul was born August 27, 1921, in Paavola, Michigan, a son of the late Otto and Hilda (Lindgren) Santti. He attended the Alston School.
On June 7, 1949 he married the former Eva Turunen in Pelkie and she preceded him in death on June 5, 2001.
Paul worked several jobs throughout his life. He was a merchant seaman on the great lakes for 7 years, a dairy and vegetable farmer, he operated a greenhouse/nursery, sold topsoil and sod, was the bus driver and janitor at the Pelkie School, handyman for the Baraga County Shelter Home and Hanka Homestead and the head sawyer at Allwoods. He was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie and the Laird Historical Society. Paul's greatest love was gardening. He also enjoyed children, making homemade rag rugs, beekeeping and playing scrabble with his wife.
He is survived by 3 sons, Clyde Santti of Baraga, Irving (Patricia) Santti and Steve (Wendy) Santti, both of Pelkie; 3 daughters, Paulette (John Landreville) Laitila of Agate Harbor, MI, Cindy (John) Hoover of Alston and Tammy Santti of Rochester, MI; 2 sisters, Mary Bohey of Detroit, Bertha Honkala of L'Anse; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins; and his dog, Snickers. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Dorothy, Martha, Julia, Anna, George, Heimo, Toivo, Irene, Helen, Marian and Aune.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2005 at 11 a.m. in Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie with Rev. Dean Franz officiating. Interment will be in the Alston Cemetery.
