Peter J. Raymond

Peter Joseph Raymond, age 83, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 1, 1920 in Baraga, son of Harvey and Ruth (Shulstad) Raymond. Peter was a member of the American Legion Post 444, having served in the Marine Corps for four years in the South Pacific during WWII from 1941-45. He married the former Ellen Koskinen on August 15, 1946 in Baraga.

Peter attended Baraga High School, graduating in 1937, and Northern Michigan University graduating in 1949. He received Masters Degrees from University of Michigan in Secondary School Administration, and Masters degree in Science from Michigan State University. He taught in bother Baraga and L'Anse schools, and was Principal of L'Anse High School for seven years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Retired Teachers Association, Michigan Association of High School Principals, and Baraga County Retired Teachers Association.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son Charles; and brother Harvey.

Peter is survived by his wife Ellen of Baraga; brother Perry Raymond of Bend, Oregon; daughter-in-law Cecilia Raymond of Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren, Tim Raymond and Allison (Mike) LeRoy; three great grandchildren, Ellen Marie, Claire, and Julia; many nieces, nephews and other family members.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga. Visitations will be on Tuesday from 6-9:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Judy Mattson will officiate. The American Legion Post 444 will conduct a military service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery in the spring. The nephews will serve as pallbearers. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
