Raymond Vassel, age 75 of Alston, MI, formerly of Garden City, MI, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2008 at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born August 31, 1932 in Cleveland, OH and was married to the former Elaine Peterson of Alston on September 22, 2001. He is survived by his wife Elaine and his children, Sue (Kevin) Cassady of Westland, MI, Robert (Cynthia) Vassel of Concord Twp, OH, John (Rhonda) Vassel of Mulliken, MI and JoAnne (Steve) Marsh of Canton, MI, 6 grandchildren, brother Donald (Marty) Vassel of Lakewood, OH, and a sister Delores (Jay) Swetkis of Norwalk, OH He is also survived by his wife Elaine's four children and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna McFarlan-Vassel in February of 2000, parents Michael and Mary Vassel, 2 brothers Nick and Vincent, and a sister Agnes.
Raymond served as an Army Corporal during the Korean Conflict. He was self employed for about 40 years owning a neon sign business and retiring in 1998. He enjoyed doing household projects and loved living in the Upper Peninsula. Raymond was a lifetime member of the Alston VFW Post 7646 and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus in Garden City, MI.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 13th at 3:00 PM at Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse with Pastor Elmer Liimatta officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Baraga County Area Veterans will be conducting military rites at 2:30 PM. The Alston VFW Auxiliary will put on a luncheon following the service in The Sharing Room at the Jacobson Funeral Home.
