Richard (Smack) L. Semasky, Sr, age 75, of Zeba, MI, walked on peacefully at home surrounded by his close friends and family on Monday, August 13, 2012.
Smack was born April 17, 1937 in L'Anse, MI son of John and Delia (Santeline) Semasky. He grew up in L'Anse and joined the US Air Force in 1954. Smack was a long-time fishermen from Bay Mills; and was one of the first law enforcement officers for the Bay Mills Indian Community before moving back to L'Anse and taking a job with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Conservation in the mid-80's where he spent over 25 years on the job and ultimately retiring as the Supervisor of law enforcement for all Tribes surrounding the Great Lakes for the entire Western District of Michigan with offices as far as Moe Lake, WI to Watersmeet and Bay Mills, Michigan.
He was a member of the VFW, KBIC, and the Ojibwa Seniors. Smack loved hunting, fishing and enjoyed cooking and smoking fish; he also enjoyed spending time with his best friend Robbie and R.B., Nikki and Rob.
He is survived by his long-time very special friend Gwen Loonsfoot of Zeba; five sons, Irving A. (Susan) Teeple of Ohio, Michael Semasky of Georgia, Richard (Lydia) Semasky, Jr. of Brimley, MI, John (Jodi) Semasky of Traverse City, MI, Dale Semasky of Shingleton, MI; three daughters, Elaine (Elmer) Lehre of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Irene (Ron) Semasky of Sault Ste. Marie, and Joy (Dave) Hunt of Brimley, MI; grandchildren, Christopher, Gisele, and Stephanie Teeple, Stephanie and Steven Semasky, Tasheena McCullough and Casey Spencer-Semasky, Kayla Semasky, Dale, Joseph, Joshua, and Dillon Semasky, Darren, Megan, and Emily Lehre, and Jayna Hunt; nieces Carol Holland, Delia (Robert) Bowen, and nephew William (Scooby) Schofield (Tweek); and several great grandchildren.
Smack was predeceased by his parents; wife Terese (Rapson); sisters, Jean and Gracie; brothers, Harold, Elmer, and Raymond; his son Robert; and his granddaughter, Alicia.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 15th at 11:00 a.m. at the Ojibwa Seniors Ceremonial Room in Baraga, MI. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Indian Pinery Cemetery in L'Anse, MI with military rites being conducted by the Baraga County Area Veterans under the direction of the American Legion Post 444. The Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
