Robert Wayne Whaley, age 81 of L'Anse, MI passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 16, 1927 in Pequaming, MI son of Guy and Theressa (Thoresen) Whaley. Robert attended school in Pequaming and then went into the US Navy from 1945-46 during WWII. He married the former Rhoda Lundberg on September 29, 1951 at First Lutheran church in L'Anse. He worked in the woods prior to going to work for Hannah Mining Company, sailing on the ships as an engineer, retiring in 1984.
Robert was a member of United Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 144, VFW Post 3897, Masonic Lodge 547 F & AM, Shriner's, and the L'Anse Lions. He enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, playing video poker at the casino, Friday fish fries, and his coffee clutch at the nite owl.
Surviving are his daughters Therese Ellen Korpi of L'Anse, Sandra Whaley of L'Anse; brother, Tom (Judy) Whaley of Arizona and Skanee; sisters, Donna (Donald) Johnson of L'Anse, Carol Nickel of Arizona; granddaughter Heather (Paul) Perry of Aura; 3 great grandchildren, Josh Johnson, Seth Perry, Jenna Perry; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in L'Anse. Rev. Scott Williams will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. The Masons will conduct a service at 12:00 p.m.. The burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at the graveside on Monday. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
