Roland Huhtala, Sr., 85, of L'Anse, died Saturday morning, June 17, 2006 at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 30, 1920, in Ishpeming, Michigan, a son of the late Arvid and Fannie L. (Keranen) Huhtala and had been a lifelong Baraga County resident. On August 28, 1948 he married Kathleen Denomme in L'Anse.
Roland was a WWII veteran having served in the US army. He served in campaigns in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.
Following his discharge from active duty, Roland worked as a logger prior to his employment with the Baraga County Road Commission where he retired in 1977 as Superintendent.
He was a member of the L'Anse VFW. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Huhtala of L'Anse; children, Barbara (Roger) Jahfetson of Baraga, Roland Huhtala, Jr. of L'Anse, Linda (Dale) Hutula of Watton and Mary (Roger) St. Andre of L'Anse; grandchildren, Roger (Heather) Jahfetson, Steve (Dawn) Jahfetson, Brad Hutula and Betsy Hutula; great-grandchildren, Kodi, Kooper, Kinsei, Sammi, Alex, Marti and Cori; a "special little girl-friend", Nicole Delene; and sister, Miriam Kulju of Santa Barbara, CA. His parents and a brother, Roy preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2006 in the funeral home. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Herman Cemetery.
