Ronald Albert Koponen

Ronald Albert Koponen, age 71 of L'Anse, MI passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at his home with his family at his side.
He was born February 20, 1943 in L'Anse, MI son of Hjalmer and Ione (Almli) Koponen. Ron graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in Westland, MI in 1961. He then went into the US Marine Corp. from 1961-81; serving in Vietnam, Bay of Pigs, Granada, and Santa DaMingo. In 1968 he married Sandra Arbin. After he got out of the Marines he attended Michigan Tech University for 3 years. Ron was a self-employed carpenter until retiring in 2004.
Ron was a life member of the VFW Post 3897 where he was a commander for 5 years and senior vice for 7 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, golfing, reading, and Lions football.
Surviving are his FiancAC. of 16 years Carol Larson of L'Anse; son Marcus Koponen of Ironwood; daughter Amanda (Charles Elam) Koponen of Westland; grandson Charly Elam; brothers, Thomas (Mari) Koponen of Pelkie, and Jim Koponen of Livonia.
Preceding him in death are his parents; and wife Sandra Koponen.
Per his request there will be no visitation or service. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
