Ruth H. Nurkala, age 75 of Watton passed away on Monday, November 11, 2002 at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield where she has been a resident for more than five years.
She was born November 11, 1927 in Paynesville, MI daughter to the late John and Jennie (Binola) Oinas. Ruth married Eino Nurkala on September 11, 1954 in Covington. She worked at the Covington Rest Home for several years.
Ruth was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington. She enjoyed downhill skiing, playing the keyboard and the accordion, sewing, crocheting, and loved flowers.
She is survived by three daughters, Sharon (James) Burdick of Ishpeming, Gloria (Leonard) Johnson of Bergland, Susan (Theodore) Herman of Watton; brother, John Oinas of Paynesville; sister, Eda Smith of Kerrville, TX; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Eino on November 21, 1995; son Timothy Nurkala; daughter Sandra Vondell; brothers, William Oimas and Leo Mattson; sister, Ida Brady; and a grandson.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Mark Reinsch will officiate. Burial will be in the Covington Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
