Senu "Sally" R (Horma) Phillippi

Senu “Sally” R. Phillippi, age 100, a former resident of Pelkie died December 6, 2016 at Bayside Village Nursing Home in L’Anse, Michigan.

She was born May 9, 1916 in Herman, Michigan the daughter of John and Anna (Pasanen) Horma. Sally spent her early years in Herman and attended L’Anse Township Schools. Later she was employed for several years in Detroit.

In 1940 she married the late Walfred Kemppainen who preceded her in death in 1969. A son Michael, two brothers Sigurd and Ambrose, two sisters Helmi Rutokowski and Lillian “Sonia” Maki also preceded her in death. Sally later married John E. Phillippi in 1976 and he preceded her in death in 2008.

She was of Lutheran faith and a member of the Woman’s Lutheran Guild for many years as well as the Pelkie Historical Society. Sally was employed at the Pelkie Co-op Store for 17 years. She enjoyed baking and loved caring for her flowers.

Surviving are a son Dennis (Linda) Kemppainen of Lynchburg, Virginia, two grandsons Derek and Wally Kemppainen, one great grandson Austin Kemppainen, nieces Karen Lahti of Ontonagon and Nancy Eliassen of L’Anse, nephew Michael (Roberta) Maki of Laurium, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers; donations may be made to the Pelkie Fire and  Rescue Department or your preferred charity.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 12:30 p.m.in the Pelkie Cemetery.   Rev. Peter Suomela will officiate.  The Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
