Shirley Dalene (Hedges) Jokela

Shirley Dalene Jokela, 81, of Pelkie, died Saturday evening, October 13, 2018 at Bayside Village in L’Anse.

She was born May 16, 1937 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, a daughter of the late Ralph and Ruth (Olson) Hedges. Her family moved to the Detroit area and she was raised in Roseville, MI.

On December 3, 1960 she married John Samuel Jokela in Lower Michigan.

Shirley worked as a secretary for General Motors in her youth and later was employed for many years at the Pelkie Co-Op. She was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church and enjoyed crafting and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, John S. Jokela; children, Brian Jokela, Steven (Frank) Steiner, Kevin Jokela and Kim Cole; grandchildren, Sara and Scott Jokela, Christina, Jonathan and Jennifer Harper, Matthew, Daniel & Valerie Jokela; 8 great-grandchildren; siblings, Joann (Robert) Scott, Gary (Joannie) Hedges, Wesley (Sue) Hedges and Penny Hedges; and many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Harvey, Larry, Thomas and Kathy Hedges.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 10 am to 12 Noon at the Jacobson Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 12 Noon in the funeral home with Rev. Bucky Beach officiating. Interment will take place in the Pelkie Cemetery.
