Shirley A. LaPlante, 62, of L'Anse, died Monday morning, June 12, 2006, at her home.
She was born September 14, 1943, in L'Anse, a daughter of Edwin and Elsie (Heikkinen) Nevala. Shirley was a L'Anse High School graduate and attended beautician school in Marquette.
She had resided in California for a few years before returning to L'Anse. Shirley was self employed as a beautician and hairdresser and operated her own shop for a number of years.
Shirley was a talented artist, she enjoyed painting and antiques. She also enjoyed gardening and working with flowers.
She is survived by her children, Gilbert (Pam) Martinez of L'Anse and Michelle Halverson of Baraga; mother, Elsie Nevala of L'Anse; her loving companion of more than 30 years, Francis J. Whitman of L'Anse; 4 grandchildren, Brett, Isabelle, Sheila and Sheena; 2 brothers, Gary (Liz) Nevala of Ishpeming and Howard (Janet) Nevala of L'Anse; a sister, Lorraine (Larry) Seratti of Spread Eagle, WI; and several nieces and nephews. Her father, Edwin Nevala, brother, Dicky Nevala and sister, Arlene Kehrer preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Williams officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Pequaming Cemetery.
