Shirley Ann McKasy, age 91, of Baraga, Michigan, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 9, 1933, in Baraga, the daughter of Charles and Alice (Chosa) Shelafoe. Shirley graduated from Baraga High School in 1951 and later earned a Liberal Arts degree from Northern Michigan University. In 1952, she married Myron Williamson, and together they resided in Minnesota for 28 years. Shirley worked as a counselor in Hudson, WI, where she met Anthony McKasy. They married on May 7, 1989, and made their home in St. Paul, MN, before eventually returning to Baraga.
Shirley was a proud member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and actively participated in the Ojibwa Seniors, the Board of Regents for KBOCC, and the Ojibwa Language Masters Apprentice Program. Sobriety was an important part of her life, and she took great care of herself by walking and swimming regularly. She also enjoyed shopping, dining out, and taking scenic drives.
She is survived by her son, Myron (Connie) Williamson of Oakdale, MN; daughter, Debra Williamson of Baraga; nine grandchildren: Matthew Williamson, Cassandra Mueller, Christa Carter, Brent Williamson, Christine Awonohopay, Tonnie Williamson-Edwards, Jill Gavnik, Paige Sokolik, and Travis Sokolik; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Alice Shelafoe; husband, Anthony McKasy; daughter, Lynn Sokolik; sister, Verna Baltes; and brother, Harold Shelafoe.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 13, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will take place on Friday, February 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Assinins, MI, with Fr. Jins Joseph officiating. An additional visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon will follow at the Ojibwa Seniors in Baraga. Burial will take place in the spring at Assinins Cemetery.
