Steven George Loosemore, age 70 of Houghton, MI passed away at U.P. Health System Marquette on Sunday, March 25th, 2018 after a difficult struggle with esophageal cancer.
Steve was born in 1947 in Hancock, MI son of Wesley and Helmi (Wayrynen) Loosemore. He graduated from Berkley High School in 1963 and from Michigan Tech in 1984 with a degree in civil engineering. Having started out in the early 1970's pounding stakes for the state Highway Department as a seasonal worker, he worked his way up to the position of District Engineer, responsible for a large area of the western Upper Peninsula. He retired in 2002.
Steve was a United States Air Force veteran, having served in the Viet Nam War, where his air base came under frequent rocket attacks by the Viet Cong.
He also sailed on "the boats" for the 1974 season with the Great Lakes Merchant Marine.
Steve was a rather shy and reclusive man with a number of foibles, but is remembered for his generous nature, his dedication to family, his sense of moral obligation to society, and his love of animals. His hobbies varied over his lifetime, but included stream fishing, old cars, military history, rifle shooting, woodworking, walking his dogs, and reading books. He had traveled to Chile for fishing, and to England to seek out his family roots. He worked as a volunteer for the Copper Country Humane Society, transporting animals to veterinarians.
Steve is survived by his close friend Karen LaMore of Marquette; his parents Helmi and Wesley Loosemore of Skanee; his brothers Charles Loosemore of Redding, California and John (Maureen) Loosemore of Hancock, Michigan; his sisters Wendy (Ed) Kozich of Davisburg, Michigan, Pat (Kazu) Iwasaki of Santa Cruz, California, and Sandra Loosemore of Colorado Springs, Colorado; by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and by his beloved dog Lumpy.
The family asks that contributions in his memory be made to the Copper Country Humane Society or to Beacon House of Marquette.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 29th from 10-11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee. His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Peter Suomela officiating.
