Sylvia Hildur Nelson, age 98 of Skanee, MI passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014 at her son's home in L'Anse, MI.
She was born April 27, 1915 in Aura, MI daughter of Matt and Sophia (Haapalehto) Toyras. Sylvia grew up in Aura. She married Elmer Nelson in 1933 in Houghton, MI. She worked at Winkler's Nursing Home as a nurse's aide; then worked at BCMH as a seamstress. Sylvia enjoyed quilting and gardening.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee, WELCA, and the Skanee Historical Society.
Surviving are her sons, Randolph Nelson of Portland, OR, Wayne (Karen) Nelson of L'Anse; daughters, Hazel (John) Bernarde of Loveland, CO, Marion (Roger) Malueg of Fern, WI, Marlene (Jim) Warner of Baxter Springs, KS; brother Helmer (Pearl) Toyras of Aura; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Elmer; son Dennis Nelson; brother Matt Toyras; sisters, Helga Franciskovich, Hulda Kokko, Hilda Saari, Helvie Gorinac, Siri Ollila, Gertrude Elmblad, and Signe Koski.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 8th at 1:00 p.m.at Zion Lutheran Church is Skanee. Visitation will be from 11-1:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Judy Mattson will officiate. Burial will be in the Skanee Cemetery in the spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
