Sylvia I. Ross

Sylvia I. Ross, age 83, formerly of L'Anse, passed away on Monday, July 23, at the Family Heritage Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, where she has been a resident patient for the past five years.

Sylvia was born December 16, 1917 in Redridge, MI, daughter to the late Walter and Amanda (Moilanen) Coponen. She grew up in the Detroit area. On Sept. 15, 1937 she married Jesse O. Ross in Indiana. From 1955 to 1969 they owned and operated the L'Anse Dry Cleaners. They moved to Wisconsin and from 1975 to 1980 they managed a gas station for S.S.G. Corporation in Ellsworth, WI. Upon retirement they moved to New Richmond, WI until 1985 when she moved to Cupertino, CA for a couple of years, returning then to Wisconsin Rapids. Sylvia enjoyed bowling, cross stitching, and being around her grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Larry (Judy) Ross of L'Anse; two daughters, Ann Ross of Cupertino, CA, Virginia Miller of Savage, MN; one stepson, Jesse O. Ross of Memphis, TN; two brothers, Clarence Coponen of Arizona, Floyd (Lillian) Coponen of Highland, MI; ten grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Sylvia is preceded by her husband Jesse on Feb. 26, 1985; daughter Jeanette Holso; two brothers, Ray and Wesley Coponen; sisters, Martha Horvaka, and Hazel Schnabel.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 27, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the Aura Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
