Sylvia Usitalo Girsch Trowbridge, age 88 of Baraga, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2001 at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
She was born February 2, 1913 in Baraga, daughter of the late John and Sophie (Kurunsaari) Usitalo. Sylvia graduated from Baraga High School in 1932. She moved to Skokie, IL in 1934, and married Edward Girsch in 1942. They resided there until he died in 1971. She moved back to Baraga until 1981 when she married James Trowbridge. They lived in Branson, MO until 1986, when he passed away. Sylvia then moved to Calumet where she resided until going into Bayside Village four years ago.
Sylvia was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Eastern Star, VFW Auxiliary in L'Anse, and Baraga Land Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included needle work, knitting, gardening, reading, and pottery.
She is survived by a daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" Caron of Calumet; two grandchildren, Andrew Caron of Hancock, and D'Lene Caron of South Range; great-grandchild Richard Turino; and several nieces and nephews.
Sylvia is preceded in death by a son Robert Girsch in 1968; brothers George, Eino, Toivo, and August Usitalo; and sisters Alma "Bunny" Ramsey, and Anne Johnson.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga. Pastor Judy Mattson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
