Toivo Haara

Toivo "Toiky" Haara, age 83 of L'Anse passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2003 at the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

He was born May 27, 1920 in Pelkie, MI son to the late Andrew and Elsie (Kurkkinen) Haara. Toiky married Eva Cadeau on June 20, 1942, they celebrated 50 years together before her passing away. He was in the U.S. Army from 1943-45 during WWII and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge for which he received a Purple Heart. He returned to L'Anse and worked at the Ford Garage for 22 years. In 1967 Toiky became a Village Trustee. He later worked for the Village Garage as a mechanic for eight years, retiring in 1975.

Toiky was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church of L'Anse, American Legion Post 144, VFW Post 3897, DAV, Knights of Columbus, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2287. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking.

He is survived by a son Paul (Joan) Haara of Ishpeming; a daughter Phyllis (Ron) Carlson of Duluth, MN; a sister Selma Haanpaa of L'Anse; four grandchildren, Amy Bourgoyne, Tom Carlson, Bethany Hiitola, Kimberly Haara; four great grandchildren, Adam Bourgoyne, Autumn and Forest Carlson, Nathan Hiitola.

Toiky is preceded in death by his wive Eva in Sept. 21, 1995 and eight brothers and sisters.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 12:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10-12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Greg Heikkala will officiate. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct grave side military services. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
