Toivo Brynolf Mutkala, age 90 of Pelkie, MI passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Bayside Village in L’Anse.
Toivo was born July 24, 1924 in Pelkie, MI son of Samuel and Hilma (Vahamaki) Mutkala. He attended the Gidding and Alston Schools. Toivo married Ruth Pesonen on August 3, 1946. They owned and operated a 360 acre dairy farm. He owned and drove logging trucks and put on over a million miles for himself and others. He retired in 1986.
He is a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie, and a former member of the Laird Twp. Fire Department, a former board member of Pelkie Credit union and the Laird Twp. School Board. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, hauling sand and gravel, plowing snow, and traveling with his wife..
Surviving are his daughters, Carol (Rodney) Lindrus of Hancock, MI, Alice Mutkala of Negaunee, MI, Jean (James) Grentz of Nisula, MI; sister Bertha McClung of Alston; six grandchildren, Cathy Manninen, Jon (Beth) Lindrus, Gordon Grentz, Chad (Heather) Grentz, Jesse (Kiley) Grentz, Dustin (Kimberly) Grentz; 12 great grandchildren, Amanda, Jordon, Carter, Dylan, Ethan, Mara, Aiden, Elise, Samuel, Gabriel, Joelle, and Jacstin; a family friend Jerry Hribal; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife Ruth Mutkala in 2014; brothers, Arthur, Wayne, Edwin, Ernest, and Wesley.
Visitation was on Monday, March 2nd from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie. The funeral was held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the church with Rev. Tom Schierkolk officiating. Luncheon and fellowship followed in the church hall. Burial will be in the spring in the Pelkie Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
