Tyyne S. Nylund died July 10, 2004 in Brighton at age 95. She was born February 19, 1909 to Sam and Helvi (Toppari) Rajala and was the eldest daughter of 9 children. She was born and raised in Baraga, Michigan. At age 15, she went to work at the Douglas Hotel in Hancock for a short time before moving to the Detroit area to work as a live-in maid to several families. She married Al Tervo in 1933. She later married William (Runo) Nylund in 1940. He predeceased her in 1989 after 49 years of marriage. In 1994, she moved from Redford to Brighton. Tyyne was involved in the Finnish Center, Farmington Hills, where she was a lifetime member and in her church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Redford. Her life revolved around her large family and she enjoyed her grandchildren, and cooking and serving those she loved.
She is survived by children Carol (Bob) Stapula of Howell, Nancy Arthur of Hancock, Ellen (Bill) Even of Maryland, Susan (Tom) See of Hartland, Diane Allen of South Lyon, and William (Vivian) Nylund of Brighton, 19 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, sister Ruth (Ernie) Beck of Marquette.
Brother John, sisters Ina Yon, Julia Ross, Sylvia Waatti, Ellen Lein, Olga Pulkki and Nelma White, predeceased her.
Memorials may be made to the Finnish Center Association or St. Joseph Hospice, (Livingston County).
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 24 at 10:00 am at the Pelkie Cemetery. Rev. Elmer Liimatta will officiate. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
