Vera Mae Johnson, age 69, of Baraga, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nurse Unit.
She was born May 11, 1932 in St. Ignace, MI, daughter to the late Mitchell and Catherine (Anthony) Wabaganese. She was raised in St. Ignace and moved to South Haven where she lived up until 1991 when she moved to Baraga.
Vera enjoyed making fry bread, baking, doing crossward puzzles, and sewing. She was a member of St. Basil's Catholic Church in South Haven, MI, and Little Traverse Bay Indian Community.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Shawa of L'Anse, Phillip (Mary) Shawa of Grand Rapids; a daughter, Victoria (Shawa) Loonsfoot of Baraga; a brother, George Peaine of St. Ignace; and five grandchildren, Stacy (Jeff) Smothers, Andrea (Shawa) Cochran, Robert A. Shawa, Crystal Shawa, and Michael Johnson.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Shawa Sr., Ralph Mitchell, and Louis Johnson; and a daughter Theresa E. Mitchell in 1990.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, August 15, from 7-9 p.m. at the Calvin-Starks-Frost Funeral Home in South Haven, MI. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Basil's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in South Haven, MI. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
