Virginia May Penokie, age 86 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Bayside Village in L’Anse.
She was born February 1, 1928 in L’Anse, MI daughter of J. Oliver and Nettie (Bye) Paquette. Virginia graduated from L’Anse High School in 1947. She married Bernard Penokie on February 18, 1950 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. She was the office manager for Penokie Electric since 1950. Virginia enjoyed collecting stamps, traveling, playing golf, spending time with her grandchildren and her dog Saussy.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and a former member of the L’Anse Golf Club.
Surviving are her sons, George O. (Patricia) of Rochester, MN, Kenneth C. (Shirley) of Escanaba, MI, James A. (Jennifer) of L’Anse, John R. (Amy) of Green Bay, WI; sister Patsy Lane of L’Anse; brother-in-law Henry Tangen of Baraga; grandchildren, Tristan, Ethan, Eric (Alayna), Hunter, Autumn , Darrin Bell, and Kaylee Brunk; several nieces and nephews and her dog Saussy.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Bernard; brothers Kenneth, LeRoy, and Ralph Paquette; sisters Beatrice Sundquist and Alice Tangen.
A memorial mass will be held on Friday, May 2 nd at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Fr. Nick Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart School, 433 E Baraga Ave., L’Anse, MI 49946. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
