Vivian Mae Prost, age 83 of Baraga died on Monday, May 26, 2008 at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L'Anse following a short illness. Vivian was born on May 4, 1925 in Jasper, Minnesota to William and Selma (Studt) Peterson. She grew up on her parent's farm in Jasper. Their family had five girls and one surviving boy. Vivian helped her family on the farm until she went to work for Western Union. While working in Chicago, she met her future husband, Leonard, at the Argonne Ballroom. On October 30, 1948, she married Leonard, moving to Baraga in 1951 with their young son, Bill. Their family grew to include, Michael, Loren, and Lee.
Mrs. Prost was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as secretary for many years and she was also a member of the Baraga County Historical Society. Vivian was an active member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga. She severed as a Sunday School Teacher, and also was involved with the Altar Guild and LCW. She was very civic-minded and devoted much of her time to serve the church and the community. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and operated her own bakery in downtown Baraga for a couple of years.
Vivian had many interests which included painting, quilting, sewing, cooking, and entertaining. She also enjoyed traveling, including trips around America and a whirlwind tour of Europe with her good friend, Toini Moberg.
Vivian is survived by her sons, William (Cindy), Michael (Christine), Loren (Karen), and Lee (Linnea), grandchildren, John, Michelle, Lauren, and Meghan Prost, step-grandchildren, Jarrod Soli and Jackie Dowling, two step great-grandchildren, Morgan and Nicholas Dowling, two sisters, Sylvia Nelson, and Evelyn Peterson, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, and brothers, Arthur and Loren, and sisters, Ruby and Lila.
A memorial service for Vivian will be held on Monday, June 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga, Michigan. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Pastor Ted Koehl will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bayside Village or Holy Cross Lutheran.
