Voitto E. Wanhaaho, age 78, of Elo, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
Voitto was born September 15, 1922 in Elo, MI, son to Adam and Lydia (Wuori) Wanhaaho. He grew up in Elo, and was a farmer and woodsman. Voitto served in the US Marine Corps during WWII, from April 1945 until August 1946. He was with the US Merchant Marines, sailing the Great Lakes, retiring from the US Steel Fleet in 1972. He loved gardening, flowers, and playing the mandolin.
Voitto was a member of the Mission United Lutheran Church and the VFW Post 7646 in Alston.
He is survived by one brother Martin (Sylvia) Wanhaaho of white Pine; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law.
He is preceded in death by his parents, ten brothers, and three sisters.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 8, at 3:00 p.m. at Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Elo Cemetery. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
