Walter J. Clements

Walter J. Clements, age 89 of L'Anse passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at the Florence Villa Nursing Home in Florence, WI.

He was born July 1, 1914 in Scott Lake, MI son of the late Frank and Margaret (Finn) Clements. Walter attended school in Gaastra. He was in the US Army, a veteran of WWII, from Jan. 1941 until Dec. 1945. Walter married the former Bethel Schultz on Feb. 4, 1946 in Gaastra. He worked as an Iron Miner in the Book Mine in Alpha, C.C.I. & North Range, Verona Mining Co. in Caspian, and the Bristol Mine in Crystal Falls, retiring in 1971.

Walter is a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, American Legion Post 144, Fraternal order of the Eagles Aerie #2287, Baragaland Senior Citizens. He loved to play cribbage and was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his wife Bethel of L'Anse; son Walter "Buck" (Doreen) Clements of Texas, daughters, June Pauliot of Florence, WI, Sherry (John) Baker of Colorado; brother, Ronald (Jean) Clements of Schwartz Creek, MI; sisters, Margaret Sheehan of Seattle, WA, Germaine (Gerald) Stromberg of Gaastra; three sister-in-laws, Linda Clements of Caspian, Mabel Clements of Flint, Theresa Schuls of Iron Mountain; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Walter is preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Lawrence, and Francis Clements.

A memorial mass will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on Friday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. The Eagles will conduct a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. followed by a veterans service at 10:45 a.m.. Fr. Greg Heikkala will officiate. Burial will be in the Stambaugh Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
