Walter Douglas Kinnunen Sr., age 67 of Arnheim, MI passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, MI.
He was born on January 26, 1945 in Arnheim, MI son of Oiva and Margaret (Anttonen) Kinnunen. Walter lived in Arnheim his entire life; he graduated from Baraga High School in1963 then went into the US Army until 1965. He married the former Carolyn Routsi. Walter worked for Selkey Manufacturing for about 5 years and then was self employed; retiring in 1987.
Walter was a past member of the VFW in Chassell. He loved hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his sons, Walter D. (Leah) Kinnunen Jr. and Eric Kinnunen both of Arnheim, daughters, Lisa (Curt) Benaglio of Battle Creek, MI and Amy (Jody) Pittsley of Baraga; brothers, Francis Kinnunen of Arnheim and John (Diane) Filpus of Chassell; seven grandchildren, Megan and Bryan Kinnunen, Cody and Chelsea Pittsley, Rebecca, Trevor, and Brandon Benaglio.
Preceding him in death are his parents Oiva Kinnunen and Margaret Kinnunen Filpus; brother Emil Filpus; sisters, Bertha Saarinen, Lucille Hopp, and Florence Kinnunen.
Walter's family would like to thank the Veteran's Administration, Houghton County Medical Care Facility and Portage Health Home Care & Hospice. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Portage Health Foundation-Hospice Fund, 821 W. Waters St., Hancock, MI 49930.
Services will be held on Friday, June 29th at Jacobson Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m.; with Baraga County Area Veterans conducting military rites under the direction of the American Legion Post 444 followed by a memorial service with Rev. Dave Weber officiating. Family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. A luncheon and fellowship will follow in the Sharing Room at the Jacobson Funeral Home.
